James Cameron reveals Avatar's sequels release date

Avatar 2 is reportedly hitting theaters at Christmas 2017, with the sequels opening in 2018 and 2019.

Speaking with the Montreal Gazette, Avatar director James Cameron confirmed the potential release dates of the trio of sequels and spoke about the how each film relates to each other.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target,” Cameron said. “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a met-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

Cameron also mentioned the design for the Avatar sequels is “more or less finished” and that it's taken two years to develop the creatures, landscapes, and “new worlds within the world of Pandora.”

“The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year,” he said.

The first Avatar film hit theaters back in 2009, becoming the highest grossing film worldwide ever, ahead of James Cameron’s Titanic. With the bar set so high for a sequel, Cameron recently talked about the pressure of filming Avatar 2, saying he hoped the first film wasn’t a “big fluke.”
